In August 2006, Southwest Hospital Emergency Response Team (SHERT) contacted area
hams to investigate the feasibility of installing a voice VHF/UHF radio system for
redundant, backup communications for the hospitals in the Southwest region of Kansas.
Southwest Kansas area Hams were contacted to attend a meeting to see if there was
enough interest in the ham community to take on such a large and complex project.
A series of meetings were held among the members of the group and some Area Emergency
Managers to discuss the best design and select the best equipment for a VHF/UHF
linked voice repeater system. Four existing tower locations were chosen to install
the UHF repeaters.
After the original sites were installed, five additional sites
were selected. The equipment was procured, installed and linked to the SKECT network.
